Had to get away for the day

I mean I should have stayed and cleaned or something but like most of the eastern/midwestern US I've been snowed in for weeks and it wasn't snowy today. It was supposed to be in the 60s. It was not. It was grey and cold but otherwise a good day. I really need to find OTHER things to do in Huntington other than shop because I have it to such an art, it takes me longer to drive than do anything else.

I did get myself a Hillbilly hot dog. Which one, they ask as I stand there in my Mothman shirt. Mothman, naturally.

My pull list at the comic book store is done. I'm almost relieved. Found a new one but we'll see. They did have one Hazbin Hotel funko. Vaggi. I looked around for Angel for my friend's daughter. (I personally find Funkos horrifying) Nada.

I picked up a 100$ overpriced Christmas wreath at Michaels for the 25$ it was probably worth.

And then I got mad at Macy's. I look around. It's been redone. I can't see the plus sizes. I ask.

Oh we're not carrying plus sizes any more.

Murder or shock or something must have showed in my face and she babbles. 'oh wait there's still some.'

She points to two fucking racks in the back. What the actual fuck, Macy's? I know the brand is struggling but I HATE buying clothes online. You have to waste all those resources packaging it, gas in shipping it only to find out it doesn't fucking fit or the fabric is a nightmare and have to re-waste all those resources sending it back and most plus size catalogues DO NOT have free shipping/returns such as Roaman's and Woman Within.

This store's ground level floor had been one quarter plus size just a few months ago. I DO NOT know if this is just this store is all of Macy's doing it(I was just at the one back home with it was more like half was plus). This makes NO sense. Why in the world if you're struggling do you wipe out a huge chunk of your patronage. And especially in Huntington WV. I don't know who/why someone does research on the fattest town in America but it's been Huntington WV more times than it's not.

I'm hoping it's just them like the fucking Nordstrom Rack in Columbus OH. I know my friend, JK says Nordstrom carries plus sizes in Boston but Nordstrom did the same thing in Columbus. Went from a full section to a small section to 2 racks to nothing. Kohl's has a pathetic plus section (mostly work out clothes, nothing I could wear to work) Guess I'm back to shopping JC Penny's after 20 years and whatever bizarre shit Tj Maxx has.

Speaking of that, I went to TJ Maxx/Homegoods which was being worked on and I forgot to look for the two damn things I went there for but got more woodened utensils and another sauce pot (there are reasons but they are bad ones) and all kinds of fun goodies, mostly from Italy one of which JK would probably fight me in the store over, cannoli filled with pistachio cream and some whiskey and strawberry margarita filled chocolates, Faze(?) from Finland. Both are so good I was eating them like a feral raccoon in the car if there had been more I would have went back for them.

It's music monday 30 weeks of music. This week's prompt is 14 you enjoy that’s in a different language Share your faves too. I know Suzume will be here with some but I'm waiting on my kPop friends to shine too.

Hmm... well, while the news has shifted off of Minnesota, the I*C*E raids are still happening in the USA. It feels like it's only a matter of time before more cities like mine feel the full force. I worry as a community we'll go belly up instead of defending our neighbors. I live in a majority Southeast Asian community, we also have a large refugee population that's already exhausted. So it only makes sense. As for news clips and influencers, I've had to monitor my own screen time so I can feel like I can take more information in and keep being responsible and resourceful.

This doesn't mean I don't miss by fanfic, anime or asian drama bingin, kpop jamming days. So, for today I'd like to talk about what Boys' Love I've read. I think it's fitting since all I've been doing is consuming, it's time I make some output, balance my energies - or something like that.

My first manga of 2026 was the third and final volume of Blood Night Market by Chise Ogawa. I purchased the first and second volume at last year's Anime Boston from comicopia, I think. This last volume came from Kinokuniya. (Yes I still have my $25 membership with my Sasaki & Miyano membership card.) I enjoyed the premise and had hopes for it, but the ending felt flat.

The story takes place in Blood Night City, where vampires come from human blood. Any mention of a night market will pique my interested, it usually echoes of cyberpunk, action, or lurking evils. So, knowing our protagonist, Sotetus, a member of the Blood Control Bureau, was part of the policing body of the city I was hoping for a classic trope: cop and criminal. A lot of Boys' Love I actually read are Japanese doujin so I thought it could be one of those short and sweet gems. In reality, it felt like it was too quick and a huge part was missing, and maybe it was the literally time gap of the publishing that made it feel like I didn't see the two leads develop their interest in each other. The plot solutions also felt like they had been the first idea that was thought up. I had more interest in Sotetsu's fellow BCB who could've been their own pairing and they were presented as platonic as possible. Overall, I do give it a 3/5 because the concept was good and I got through volume 1 and 2 in a breeze, it kept me going.
---

I'd like to note at this time that CAT is sitting on my right shoulder/back and I'm sitting strangely. If anything is mistyped... well, I can't be mad, she's usually home alone and I can't come to move her off.

The Troublesome Guest of Sotomura Detective Agency by Sakae Kusama was my next read, borrowed from Hoopla through my local library. (I think I keep my library manga collections alive with my checkouts.) It's one-shot manga, but who doesn't love Old Man Yaoi?

It starts at private detective Matsuda's agency, already setting the scene with an odd job more than a serious case. However, we learn pretty quickly he's basically the neighborhood's handy-man, as much as he doesn't want to admit it. It's great virtue which pairs with Kamiko, an old classmate of his who becomes his roommate and friends' with benefits. Things move quick, but in such a succinct way that I almost didn't question it (like I usually do but also accept in the same breath, haha). I like how they show the (somewhat healthy?) dependency they develop on one another and how they confront their feelings eventually. Nothing about this manga has a WOW factor, it really is another broke but sweet man plus colder, broken man who loves sweet man. Yet, that's what I like about these kinds of slice-of-life stories. I gave it a 4.5/5 because it was the scene-to-scenes that left their impressions on me.. also the childhood friends to lovers gets me every time. I'm biased!

Loved Circus by Nemui Asada, another Hoopla read, was a more unique one-shot. We start with an ex-salaryman who is ready to take his own life because he felt like he couldn't do enough for a hostess he was pining after. At this point I think a lot of people know about the host culture in Japan, but if not, this kind of plot isn't unusual. It's a method to get your customers to spend more money and bolster your own pay. I wasn't into the non-consensual part where Kei gets pulled into the job of a male brothel worker for male clients, but it's not far from the truth so I can't deny it isn't necessary. I do like the part where they flesh out the characters. I would've liked a few parts of the platonic relationships to be extended just enough for a second volume. The love interest is the top worker who we learned has deep ties to the place, which is part of our conclusion. We don't get to see much romance between them, but we do come full circle and see that they meet back up after parting for some time. Their ex-coworkers who also left return for a bit of a reunion. We see they're all in a better place, even if it's not perfect. I can see this being unsatisfying for some since I also ended with a bit of a disappointment. I gave it a 2.5/5, but for an old man yaoi this is more realistic than the previous where the feelings are there, but the pair just aren't in a place to pursue that quite yet.

The other book I got from Kinokuniya was the fourth volume of My Noisy Roommate: The Roof Over My Head Comes With Monsters and a Hottie by Kaho Ozaki. I also bought the first two volumes from last year's Anime Boston. Real estate for spirits? How interesting! Here we have Osuke, who left a perfectly good home, struggling after being kicked out of his apartment. He gets a job offer from a tall handsome man, who is still mysterious in volume 4, to work at his real estate agency. He'll get a free room out of it. Osuke's a bit of a simpleton, so he goes for it only to find out his roommate is some ikemen named Nijio. I was hoping for an in-your-face kind of seme for our soft yet goofy Osuke, but he's just a big, misunderstood and awkward silent type. (In later volumes, he's trying to be better.) At this time, it's a lukewarm read, but that's because we have only had instances of "maybe I do like him?" moments. They've yet to truly confront their feelings, so this is probably going to be long-term read. ??/5 rating!!

I just finished volume two of Ogi's Summer Break, on ComicsPlus (another library paid resource), and I like the topics they're touching upon: Ogi's identity crisis as a boy who has always like girl's clothing; Tago learning more about relationships outside of his family; how Tago's blindness isn't the main focal point, but an added point for Ogi's personal dilemma; and the relatable in-betweens of crushes and heartbreaks. It's layered, and I want more of it.

From here, I think I'll be reading more BL from Hoopla, I just have to take advantage of a free service from my library. Maybe I'll write another round-up post in the summer.

happy fanniversary

Fic number three in my series of ficlets following Ashile Sun and Li Changge's 'dates' through the episodes, with added sexytimes. This time: episode 9, their meeting at the hut.

“We have to stop meeting like this,” A’Zhun says with a smirk and resheathes his sword.

Changge has already slipped into an automatic defensive stance before her brain catches up and she recognizes his voice. She shakes herself out of it again and lets out a nervous chuckle.

He’s not entirely wrong. The last time they were alone together, they fell off a roof. What does this dilapidated cabin hold in store for them?

I can't... [personal profile] spikedluv has died very suddenly on the same day as her last post here, Feb 2nd. [personal profile] ride_4ever linked to her obituary here. I've known her as a fandom friend for years and always enjoyed her chatty posts and pics about day to day life. And oh hell, her poor family, with all they're going through at the moment.

Goddamnit.

2026 60 questions meme
What are three qualities do you value most in life?

1. Kindness. If a person isn’t kind I have a hard time liking them. Kindness is so easy to have that I don’t understand why everyone isn’t. It’s not like it’s hard work. I think everyone can be kind but some choose the negative.
2. Honesty. I think we need honest friends and family. I would want to know I treated someone badly and left it like that. If someone is a good friend they’ll give you their opinion. Whether you like hearing it or not.
3. Helpfulness. We all need help now and then. So, when I see someone struggling I quickly go into the helpful mode. I think most people do.

What are your three?

16. Do you own your own washing machine in your home, or do you use a laundry service/laundry room in the building or a launderette?

I haven’t been to a laundromat in 50 years at least. We have owned a home for that many years. I think once we were waiting for a handyman to fix our washer and we had to take everything down to laundromat. It sucked. It made me much more thankful.

How about you?

I've been thinking about writing hard to write emotional states, beyond say the actual words we can find in the emotional thesaurus (which is a great resource) How do we carry forward these states. I'm not sure I know the answer but I do have some examples.

One of the harder ones to write is naivety. So often naive ends up reading as stupid. That's not the same thing. two examples Mrs. de Winter from Rebecca and Charlie Morningstar from Hazbin Hotel. Both of these ladies I believe are meant to be naive (especially Charlie)

They are similar in how this naivety is shown. They make mistakes but they don't learn from them. The nameless Mrs de Winter is a passive twit without a brain in her head (which is a different problem) She is meant to be young and naive and caught up in the manipulations of older, vicious people but at what point do you learn from this and move on. 250 pages is almost it for her (which she immediately turns around and nearly ends up dead but that's another story as well) Without a character learning and moving on, becoming less naive you end up with a character who comes off dumb.

I see this again with Charlie. She is a sheltered princess of hell. In S1 she is naive but she seems to learn. Instead of continuing that, in S2 she digresses. She doesn't learn, worse she is so naively convinced she's right she listens to no one and then lashes out at them when it blows up in her face. This bad naive representation and it has had a high cost. The character is getting tons of hate and many fans left over how bad she came across.

Conversely, Luz from The Owl House is naive. I mean it's portal fic and she has a whole world she has no knowledge of. Like the other two ladies, she makes mistakes. But she learns from them. She apologizes when people get inadvertently hurt because of her lack of knowledge. And maybe this is the difference. Luz uses her naivety as a place to start learning. She's not a passive nitwit. She's not a wellmeaning person who refuses to own her mistakes.

I don't know. What about you? What would make/break a naive character for you? How do you handle one?

Final results on the weekend checklist!

- Finish [community profile] purimgifts fics. They're all done, I just need to pick titles and give them one final edit before I post (if I was really crunched for time, they'd be fine to go up now, but I've got a week left for polishing).
- At least 200 words on Forsaken Road or broken beaten damned Hoping for a little more this week, but it went somewhere!
- At least 200 words on any kink meme fill or WIP that isn't one of those, picked by whatever I feel like writing at the time
- At least three [community profile] fandomweekly banners
- Finish the dishes from last night (this is a Friday project) And even more dishes!
- Bake scones before the green onions go bad So I didn't actually make the scones, but I did make a plate of roasted vegetables that would make a Redwall mouse jealous, so I think that counts in principle. I'll make the scones tomorrow night.

Overall, 4/6 isn't bad! And I got laundry done and took lots of walks and read a book. I would have liked to get a few more things written, but oh well, it was a pretty good weekend overall.

I did a character playlist for an original character of mine named Moth. It feels a bit odd doing something for an original character for a fandom challenge, but working on world building for the original fantasy series universe he's in is one of the few things that's helping keep the anxiety demons at bay right now. (And several side characters may have started as Stagate SG-1 & Atlantis characters with the serial numbers filed off. Also, I just wrote a whole sorta meta thing on how he would have dealt with Soldier Boy in The Boys, which will probably never see the light of day.)

So Final Fantasy XIV has these fan fests every few years, right? I cannot afford to go to one, BUT they run a fan art contest alongside it.

I entered the contest two fan fests ago, with a very poor crocheted rendition of the Fat Cat minion. Looks like I don't have record of it on Ravelry. Needless to say, I was not at all surprised when I wasn't even a finalist, let alone a winner.

I entered the 2023 contest with a feverishly-knitted doll, and am STILL thrilled at being a finalist for it. For those that don't feel like clicking through to see the picture: the doll is wearing the Valentione dress that was so popular from several events ago.

It is now 2026, we're gearing up for another Fan Fest, which means the fan art contest is ON. Deadline is March 2nd.

I had a great idea for it, but there was NO way I could get it done in time, so even though I ordered yarn, I reluctantly put that idea to the side. Still gonna do it someday, but not when I'm under deadline.

I had another tentative idea for it, but it would have required lots and lots of counting, and fiber artists aren't that great at counting. Plus, that idea was big enough that I wasn't sure I'd have time to finish it, either.

So I fell back to my third idea, which is really one that I had last year but didn't do. Am working on it today, after not touching it for five days (yikes!).

Said in a discord:

12:21pm
so here I am, working on my fanfest entry. I am designing it myself and there's multiple pieces to it. I have proof of concept that two pieces fit correctly together, HUZZAH! but now I have to knit the other four pieces... aka, the fun part is done and now it's just work work work and blah. send me strength!

12:43 PM
it is a universal truth that knitters can't count to small digits. I was wrong, I do not have four pieces left, I have FIVE. and that's just on [redacted]. After this, I still need to do [redacted] and [redacted], oof

I have finished the first of the five pieces I have left on this portion. It took an hour. Each of the remaining four pieces will take about an hour each. And that's not including [redacted 1] and [redacted 2], which are both rather big portions themselves and will take time. I know how to do [redacted 1] already, and have ideas for [redacted 2], but the actual work of knitting is.... well, WORK.

I'm not sure I can finish before the deadline. But I am going to try. It will mean knitting most of the rest of the day, and touching it every day until deadline.

She was also the mod of one of the communities that I write in. She was always there for everyone. She will be missed. And Small Fandom Bang will never be the same again. If you could say a little prayer for her family, she would appreciate that. Thank you.

15. Have you ever considered how you would leave your home in an emergency?

I’m not quite certain what this means. Like if my house was on fire, I would grab hubby and Dakota and we would get out quickly. We wouldn’t have our car keys or our wallets. We would be stuck here outside the house until family could pick us up. This started me thinking about what we would do. This could be a lot of different reasons to leave. I know this isn’t a very good answer. But it’s all I’ve got today. 😁🌹🌹
