Blair's birthday went off perfectly.

The minute she left for class I got my ass in gear making her cake. A copycat (or closest approximation I could find) of Trader Sam's coconut cake, the cake we had at Disneyland that she said was her new favorite cake. I made my own letters out of melted chocolate in a silicone mold (Happy Name Day), and used a hunk of rock candy to represent a kyber crystal. Painted the crystal and the letters with edible UV luster dust to make them glow, which she was absolutely enchanted by, to my pride and delight.

Drove her downtown and walked to the secret location where the rage vault is located, which was her surprise birthday activity. She's been mentioning how the state of the world has been making her feel more fearful, agitated, aggressive, and that she doesn't know where to put these feelings, so this is why I thought this would be a great surprise activity. We were shown to the back where she could select a bunch of protective gear: jumpsuit, eyewear, helmet with visor, gloves, and choose a couple of weapons. She selected baseball bat and crowbar. Then, for twenty minutes, she got to break and assortment of items in that room to a loud aggressive metal soundtrack. It was a sight to behold. They let me go in too, and cower in a little alcove so I could take a few pictures and some video. It was wild standing there watching her go savage, while shards of exploding glass sailed past me (of course I was wearing protective gear too).

Afterward, we walked further downtown to eat at one of her favorite places, a gourmet woodfire pizza place. I sent her to get a table and ordered our pizza, a salad, and a couple of glasses of wine. After that, we headed to The Pearl, the cutest little hometown creamery you ever saw, for some ice cream.

Back home, I made her wait by the door while I arrange everything on the counter. Set the cake out, check. Arrange her gifts and card, check. Make sure 7 foot tall life size cardboard standee of Bode Akuna is in place, check.

She lost her mind over the giant Bode, which is exactly the reaction I wanted. Enjoyed her gifts. Also enjoyed a long shower and the massage that followed. I love a good chance to spoil her, and it was an absolute joy to put a birthday together for her. The first of either of our birthdays that we have been able to spend together in person.

Valentine's Day is tomorrow. I've already gotten a bunch of flowers and arranged them myself in a nice vase, and have wrapped the ring I bought in Washington. I'll leave the flowers on the counter so that she sees them first thing in the morning. I have to work in the morning, but in the evening, we're gonna go and get Indian food. This is also our first Valentine's Day together in person, so I'm excited and happy.

And now, I'm different from before

(Also on Ao3)

Kafka runs a hand through gray-brown hair. The sweat and unwashed oils have turned the usually soft strands into a wiry, almost sticky mass that cannot be comfortable to have hanging loose. She gathers a section, divides it into three, and as she begins to braid it back, Stelle hums into her stomach.

“You like that, hun?”

Stelle mumbles something, sleepy and contented. She shifts in Kafka’s lap, almost pulling her hair out of her partner’s hands, until she’s blinking up at Kafka, golden eyes stark against her fever-flushed cheeks. Kafka hums a little “Oh” of sympathy as she brushes the sweat from her forehead. For a moment, those golden eyes close, her darling leans into her hand, and a gentle sigh of relief warms the air between them.

It seems like Stelle then slips back into her dozing state, so Kafka returns to the braid in her hands. She’s tying it off with a burgundy ribbon when Stelle asks:

“Would you still love me if I was a worm?”

Kafka can’t help it. She laughs. Of all the things to ask, she leans her face against one hand and strokes Stelle’s fevered cheek with the other.

Deep creases form in her darling’s brow, and Stelle’s nose scrunches up like an adorable little rabbit’s. “Kafka,” she whines. “It’s a serious question.” Her bottom lip sulkily pouts out.

“And you’re the only one who would ask it.” Kafka fishes for one of Stelle’s hands, presses it to her lips with the adoration of a knight. “Of course, I’d love you, hun. Where would I be without you?”

This time, the red that spreads across Stelle’s face has nothing to do with her fever. “Kafka!” She whines again, burying her head back down in her partner’s lap. And Kafka laughs and laughs.

Friday + weekend checklist of Stuff To Work On:

- Finish [community profile] purimgifts fics. Shouldn't take more than a couple of hours, so ideally those will be complete and posted by midday Saturday.
- At least 200 words on Forsaken Road or broken beaten damned (I've had a decent run at both of those and would like to continue it)
- At least 200 words on any kink meme fill or WIP that isn't one of those, picked by whatever I feel like writing at the time
- At least three [community profile] fandomweekly banners
- Finish the dishes from last night (this is a Friday project)
- Bake scones before the green onions go bad

Wish me luck. It's not a long list, and it's supposed to be beautiful weather, so ideally I will not spend my weekend huddled under the blankets.

What are new ways you can measure progress this year?

I said I wanted to write more and I did. I made a lot of moodboards too. (I love making them). I’ve got to get busy and write some more things before the month is up.

I also like to try a new recipe every Sunday, in hopes that we’ll like something and go into my recipe book. I not only make the main dish but I. Make dessert too. I thought I would put the recipe in case anyone would like to try it.

Chicken Bubble Biscuit Bake Casserole 🥄

Ingredients:
- 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded or diced
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup or cream of mushroom
- 1/2 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn, beans)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 can (16 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough, cut in quarters
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese or mozzarella
- 1 tablespoon melted butter (optional, for brushing)

Steps:
1. Heat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9x13-inch pan.
2. In a large bowl, mix chicken, soup, sour cream, milk, vegetables, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until combined.
3. Gently fold in the biscuit pieces to coat them.
4. Spread the mixture into your prepared pan. Top with shredded cheese.
5. Cover with foil and bake fomr 20 minutes. Remove foil. Bake 10 to 15 minutes more, until biscuits are golden and cooked through.
6. Brush melted butter on top if you like. Let rest a few minutes before serving.

For extra flavor, add chopped fresh herbs or a little hot sauce when mixing your filling.

13. What’s the weather like today? Is it about average for the time of year?

It’s been 78° F-85° F for almost a month. It’s beautiful. Tomorrow it’s going to rain all day and be high of 65°. We need the rain. This is about average for us. It always feels like spring in January and February. We haven’t had much of a winter so far. And now it’s too late to have cold days. March is spring for sure.

What’s your weather like?

The eye barely hurts and the swelling is down enough that I can open my eye. It's blurry still but getting better.

I will NOT be doing [community profile] fandomtrumpshate this year. I missed that the sign up was basically 10 days, no other warning after the first and I was too busy with my pro stuff but you know what I am okay with that. I can bid on people to help out and that is one less fan thing to distract me from stuff I get paid to do. I feel more relief than disappointment.

In the good news department The Owl House lives again in graphic novel form. I'm super excited for this

Here's the fandom meme I've been wanting to do. I got this from [Unknown site tag] who mentioned there are two versions of this meme: one where you post the FIRST line/s of the FIRST posted fic of each month and one where you post the FIRST line/s of ALL the fics you've posted in a year. While I am making this a fannish 50 celebrating ME and my contributions to fandom (which I think we all should do from time to time) But since I will be here til next week trying to do ALL my stories, I shall go with the first story. Enjoy. Read if you're so moved.

Reading: January was the month of abandoned books. It's probably more reflective of my and my current state of mind than the fault of these authors, but getting my brain to engage has been a struggle.

It's February now, and I finally managed to get through This Is How We Lose the Time War by dint of listening to it on the bus. I feel that it could've benefited from two readers with more distinctively different voices, but other than that...it was a very chewy story, and I had to take a break afterwards so I could process it.

Now I'm trying to listen to To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers, but mostly my brain is too tired to do more than listen to soothing music.

Watching: Dude has been making me watch Rick & Morty from the 2nd season. Only watchable in small doses. /o\ We've also nabbed my sister's box set to watch the extended editions of Lord of the Rings, plus the fun documentaries and bonus material, and we both agree they make a hell of a lot more sense than the theatrical releases and now I completely understand the LotRPS phenomenon.

No gaming to speak of.

Crafting: I'm trying to finish the blue cabled sock yarn and I'm so close but I overdid it and borked my thigh. I'm looking into an e-spinner but they're pricey. I also (perhaps rashly) promised to knit a jumper (sweater) for my brother to replace his favourite (navy with a fair isle yoke). I've not really done much colourwork, but the sleeve cuff looks good. Sadly, I decided the size was wrong and am going to have to undo it all, unless just go back to the cuff and fudge the increases from there.

Other stuff: Work is shit. I'm looking into when I can afford to retire, but I still have a couple of kids to support.

The weather has been stupidly hot. We had a string of days that were in the 39C - 41C range, and then we finally got a smidge of rain. Not nearly enough, but it filled our rainwater tank at least.

If it seems as though Trump plans to steal the midterm elections, you’re right. If it seems as though there’s no way to stop him, you’re wrong. But if you think the institutions we already have are up to the job of stopping him, you’re also wrong.

I’ve been attending Indivisible’s weekly “What’s the Plan?” meetings with co-founders Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin for almost a year now. Indivisible’s strategy for the whole year is built around the midterm elections:

- making sure the Democrats who are elected are actually going to fight fascism instead of going along with it.
- making sure that the November election is free & fair, that we win, and that the results are enforced.

The critical, unprecedented period will be between Election Day and January 3, 2027, when the new Congress is seated. Indivisible National and other parts of the anti-MAGA movement have been taking advice from scholars of authoritarianism like Erica Chenoweth. They say that one of the most dangerous times for a democracy under threat is right around or after an election that the authoritarians are losing. That’s the point where mass mobilization, *society-wide mobilization*, may be critical.

Chenoweth and their colleagues have found that authoritarian governments will fall when when 3.5% of the population is committed to active, nonviolent resistance. For the U.S., that means we need at least 12 million people ready to make sure that when they try Jan 6 2.0 (and they *will*) it stops, flails, and falls over.

To get to that point we have to BUILD to that point. Think of a major political action as requiring muscle, which needs to be strengthened over time, it can’t just be summoned in a moment.

We KNOW the Trump Regime, the corrupt SCOTUS, and state & local level MAGA will be attacking our right & ability to vote in every way they can. We’ve mostly done what we can already with gerrymandering and counter-gerrymandering, from now on it’s going to be what Leah Greenberg calls legal whack-a-mole, where we all have to be alert to attacks on the right to vote and hit them wherever they come up.

Our tentpole events will be a series of #NoKings rallies, growing in size (numbers from What’s the Plan meeting of January 8, 2026):

• #HandsOff in April ‘25 was 3 million people.
• #NoKings, June ‘25 was 5 million.
• #NoKings2, October ‘25 was 7M.
• #NoKings3 will be March 28, we want 9M people.
• #NoKings4 in the summer, 11M
• #NoKings5 in the fall, leading up to the election, 13 million people – which is over 3.5% of the country.

Each #NoKings event is made up of thousands of local ones, they don’t involved a big march to the seat of power, unlike what you see in smaller, more centralized countries.

All US politics starts at the state and local level, organizing starts local, community is local. And importantly, elections are administered locally. #NoKings will be a way for people to become aware and connect with others in their area to monitor polling places, and to let state & local officials know that they can’t do anything in the dark.

These growing numbers are how we build to a number of people committed to oppose the regime that’s so large that even when they try to steal the election, which they will, even when they don’t want to certify the results, which they won’t, they won’t be able to stop us. Even though we won’t be fighting them with guns.

TLDR: both the doomers & the institutionalists are WRONG. Trump doesn’t have the power to just “cancel the elections”, but existing institutions aren’t enough to ensure that we have meaningful elections and that the results are honored.

We the people, organizing and working together, are what’s going to stop him. Bad news for both doomers & institutionalists: there’s work for *you* to do. Join a local organization--Indivisible, 50501, immigrants’ rights, or your local Democratic, Democratic Socialist, or Working Peoples Parties. Get to know more of the people in your neighborhood and congressional district. Become part of a team.

Here’s the motto Leah Greenberg says we should put on our walls and phone lock screens, to keep our eyes on the prize:
They are losing, so they're going to try to steal the election.
They're gonna fail, because we're gonna stop them.

this is something of a first draft. I'd like advice about how to make it punchier, more like something that would draw eyeballs on substack etc. Where do I need links? Is it structured properly, with the right things at the top?

Where should I put something about how I fit into Indivisible? I'm just a joe-normal member of a joe-normal Indivisible group, this is really reporting based on attending the weekly "What's the Plan meetings for the past year.

ETA: This is now a second draft, incorporating more links and suggestions.

If you only had one year left of life, what would you do?

I would sleep less and spend time with my family and friends. And I would write like a crazy person. No, I would write like a normal person. I would write 5 letters to each of my kids and grandkids. Something that will make them smile. In a year you could do a lot. This is sure a morbid question.
